Artist Statement

Eric Ondina Artist Painter

I compose my paintings from snapshots captured in spaces where social forces meet. I seek out the moments where conflicting narratives, values, and ideologies intersect physically, pastiching them into a panorama of our turbulent American landscape. By interpolating direct visual quotes from personal photos, social media, and the news cycle, my subject matter explores our shared understanding of truth in an era of distrust. Delving into the clash between the American myth and the new realities of our global existence, composing depictions of a society in the midst of its discontent, desperately trying to make sense of a destiny that often feels elusive, slipping beyond control and comprehension.

In this pursuit, Florida is an endless inspiration. This vibrant and mystifying state serves as a microcosm of the American experiment, proudly exhibiting our collective aspirations, passions, diversity, and peculiarities. As both a modern spectacle and an ominous bellwether for what’s to come, Florida is a natural place for my paintings to begin.

I work in a unique recipe of egg tempera. Blending a viscous balsam, fossilized hard resins, egg yolk, and water—ingredients that are incompatible, but with pressure and patience, they merge, forming a harmonious whole. While my technique pays homage to traditional painting methods, my intention is to forge a connection with the present moment, speaking directly to the soul of our current experiences through an organic style and topical subject matter.
